What Is A VPN?
Virtual Private Network (VPN)
A VPN is an internet security method used in adding extra security and privacy to your network. Public or private networks such as public WiFi (wireless), home WiFi, internet by Internet Service Providers (ISP) has a great internet security threat without a VPN.VPN is use basically to protect sensitive data. The essence of VPN is user privacy by replacing the user's initial IP address with one from VPN provider. This allows the user to hide his IP location while exposing the VPN IP to the public.
VPN Security
For the most part, VPN does not provides anonymity as some users perceive, but provides additional layer of security between you and your ISP or any network that you are connected to. This is achieve by encrypting all your data during communication before leaving your device. This means even if your data is intercepted, it will be meaningless to the person who intercepted it. VPN uses an encryption protocols that is advance and tunneling techniques that is very secure.
In country where censorship is at its peak such as China, ISP monitors all browsing activities. In such scenario, VPN will very useful because the ISP can not tell anything about your browsing activity. They can only know you are connected to an IP address which is that of the VPN providers.

Data interception on wireless network is very easy to do. This means your data can be read, changed, redirected etc between your device and the wireless device. Your data can easily be stolen through various method such as spoofing or Man In The Middle (MITM). VPN renders your data useless to the attacker. This is because what he gets an encrypted data.
VPN Protocols
1. Internet Protocol Security or IPSec
Internet Protocol Security or IPSec is used in securing internet communication over an IP network. IPSec secures Internet Protocol communication by authenticating session and encrypting each data packet while connection is taken place.
IPSec operates in Transport mode and Tunneling mode. This protect data transfer between two different networks. Transport mode encrypts packet data message only while tunneling mode encrypts the entire data packet.
2. Point to Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP)
PPTP or Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol encapsulates the data packet after creating a tunnel. It uses a Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) to encrypt data between connection. PPTP is one of the most widely used VPN protocol and has been around since Windows 95 Operating System (OS). PPTP is also supported on Linux OS and Mac OS.
3. Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (L2TP)
L2TP or Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol is a protocol that usually combines with other VPN security protocol such as IPSec to enable secure VPN connection.
5. OpenVPN
OpenVPN is an open source VPN that is useful for creating Point-to-Point. OpenVPN works based on SSL and TLS protocol with custom security protocol.
For the most part, VPN secure your data while being transferred to and fro of your device which is contrary to firewall which secure your data on your device.
